Back to School

More information will be added throughout the summer as the new school year nears.

Welcome to a new school year at Taos High School.  We hope this will be your most successful school year yet!  A back-to-school packet with information can be picked up during the week of August 4-8th.

The 2008-2009 School begins on Wednesday, August 13, 2007.  Classes begin promptly @ 7:45 a.m.

MANDATORY FRESHMEN ORIENTATION will be held on Wednesday, August 6th from 8:00-10:30 a.m.  At this time, we urge all freshmen to attend to get any questions they may have about attending Taos High School answered.  Students will be oriented about the dress code, back-to-school registration, class schedules will be passed out, and students may pay for activity/class dues at this time.  The cost is $15 total.  Check or money orders are preferred and should be made out to Taos High School.  Please put Class of 2012 in the memo section of your check.  $10 of the fee goes towards the activity fund at Taos High School and supports our school activities.  $5 goes towards the class of 2012 to offset costs of homecoming, prom and graduation in the comiing years.

Students must have a parking permit in order to park at the Taos High School.  Parking fees are $20 payable with a check, money order made payable to Taos High School or cash; and the student MUST present proof of insurance, driver's license and fill out an application in order to park at the school.  Parking is limited, so it is offered first-come, first-served.   Students without parking permits will be towed at the owner's expense.

SCHOOL NURSE

The school nurse requires immunization records to be kept up to date or else the student according to state and federal mandates may not attend school.  You should have already received notice if you require immunizations.  As required by New Mexico State law, Taos Municipal Schools requires a copy of proof of the following immunizations:

DPT/DT 4 DPT ( 1DT, TD or DPT within previous 10 years)
MMR 2 MMR by the 9th Grade
Polio 4 Polio by the 9th Grade
Hepatitis B Needs to have series of 3, in process, before enrollment.

A certificate of Religious/Conscientious Objection to Immunization can be obtained in Santa Fe from the New Mexico Department of Health.

Title I

Title I forms for students who qualify must also be signed and dated by parents and students who attend Taos High School.  If you are a new student, you may be asked to sign these the first couple of weeks of school in order for Taos High School to continue providing Title I services to students who qualify.

LOCKERS

Locker assignments (first-come, first-served) will be determined through Study Hall teachers.  Those who have a study hall teacher who does not have lockers, should make arrangements with one of their instructors for any left over lockers.

SCHEDULES/SCHEDULE CHANGES--After Friday, August 8th

  • We will be able to change schedules on Monday and Tuesday, August 11-12th from 8:00 to 3:30 p.m.  Note:  If you miss the dates for back-to-school, senior photos for off-campus photos will not be taken until the first week of school, and then only during the lunch hour.  You may call the counseling offices if you need further information about seniors, call Ms. Ann Karraker @ 751-8019.  If you are a junior, call Ms. Craig.  Sophomores and Freshmen counselors have not yet been determined, but the phone number will be 751-8017.
  • Students will not be allowed to sit in the counseling office without an appointment.  Those who do not have a class are to report to the small gym until their schedules are changed.  There are not that many.  Please call and make an appointment or sign up during your lunch,  or before or after school.  If you miss your appointment because you are not in the class you are scheduled in, the counselor will skip over your name to the next available student.  We must be able to locate you even if your schedule might be changing.
  • NOTE:  Schedule changes are only allowed in certain circumstances:
  1. Successful completion of a summer school course.
  2. Teacher-initiated level change (i.e. AP Chemistry to regular Chemistry or English 1 regular to English 9 Honors).
  3. Computer error
  4. Failed course from last year
  5. Open period--no class on your schedule -- There's a gap.
  6. A class was cancelled due to insufficient enrollment.
  7. Electives may be changed if a new class is scheduled the same period.  Yearlong class changes may be made only if both the teachers agree and the new class is the same period.

Suggested back to school supplies:

  • Backpack--Something to carry items in

  • Water bottle--classes are long

  • Diskettes--You might want to look at thumb drives.  Little ones (32 MB are available for under $30 and are much more reliable than diskettes. A holder should be purchased for diskettes

  • Pencils--numerous and mechancial

  • Binder - 1 1/2 to 2" preferred-

  • 9th graders--purchase a 2 1/2 - 3" binder

  • 300 pgs. Loose-leaf paper--wide-lined for English classes/college-ruled for math/science

  • Pens--black or blue ink only (None of the teachers want other colors--too difficult to read)

  • Dividers -- at least 6 --one for each class (Each teacher may want their own binder)

  • Graph paper--Quad ruled--1/4" for math classes

  • Ruler

  • Colored pencils

  • Highlighter

  • Calculator--TI-30X IIS for any classes below Algebra 1 or Geometry and a graphing calculator (TI-84/TI-83-Texas Instruments is preferred) for  Algebra I including Statistics, IMP-Math I and II; Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus and AP-Calculus.  Geometry students may be using it towards the end of the school year.  ACT and SAT exams allow the use of a calculator and many students who do not have one or know how to use one are at a disadvantage.  Parents are reminded that the graphing calculator will be used throughout high school and any courses in college.  It is expensive, but something your student will use daily.

REMINDERS:

Students are reminded that Taos High School does have a dress code.  Please look at your child before they walk out the door.  We are collecting t-shirts and sweat pants for students who cannot follow the dress code to wear at school.  If you would like to contribute a t-shirt(s) or old sweats, please drop them off at the main lobby office.

Students who need to change their schedule must sign up for an appointment during the first week of school.  Go to the classes you have been assigned until your schedule is changed.  Under no circumstances, should a student be waiting in the counseling office to change a schedule unless that student is not enrolled in school and must be enrolled with a parent at the school site.  If you miss your appointment with the counselor because you were not in the class you were supposed to be in, and therefore could not be found, you must reschedule.  All students who do not have a class report to the small gym.
