Safe Schools Week

The National School Safety Center, state governors and state school superintendents sponsor America's Safe Schools Week, October 21-27, 2007. This observance is also actively supported by local, state and national public officials and professional organizations.

Significant progress is being made to ensure that all of our nation's school are safe, secure and productive. At the forefront of this movement are hundreds of exemplary school, district, state and national programs. To recognize these successes and encourage others, October 21-27, 2007, has been proclaimed America's Safe Schools Week. We invite you to participate in this annual observance.

SPEAK UP AGAINST VIOLENCE

Hey students – are you concerned about violence at school? Do you know another
student with a weapon or threatening to hurt someone? Well, there’s something you can do about it. Just call 1-866-SPEAK-UP to report a weapon threat. The call is free and completely anonymous. If you know about a student carrying a weapon or threatening violence, don’t take chances, call 1-866-SPEAK-UP. That’s 1-866-SPEAK UP. It could be the most important call you’ll ever make.

What will Junior Senate be doing about School Safety Week:

We will be designing a Bulletin Board: Devote a bulletin board to speaking up by providing facts,  suggested activities and the 1-866-SPEAK UP hotline information.

We are LINKing to SPEAK UP: Add a banner that links our school’s website to the SPEAK UP campaign website, www.paxusa.org.

We will place radio PSAs: Promote the SPEAK UP message in our school by reading a Public Service Announcement (PSA) during morning announcements, or contact our local radio station and asking them to air the SPEAK UP PSA during Safe Schools Week.

Forming a School Safety Committee: Inviting interested friends to join a group devoted to addressing the issue of school safety. Developing a list of suggestions to improve safety in our school and presenting them to our principal.

TAKE THE PLEDGE -- Pledge against Gun Violence that is.  We are taking the pledge along with all other students on Thursday, October 25th during Study Hall.  The pledge is as follows:

I will never bring a gun to school;
I will never use a gun to settle a personal problem or dispute;
I will use my influence with my friends to keep them from using guns to settle disputes.

My individual choices and actions, when multiplied by those of young people throughout the country, will make a difference.  Together, by honoring this pledge, we can reverse the violence and grow up in safety.
