Dress Code

The Taos Municipal School Board has adopted a school uniform policy for K-5th. The Board of Education expects student dress and grooming to reflect high personal standards so that each student's attire promotes a positive, safe, and healthy atmosphere within the school. All students in K-5 grades will dress in the adopted clothing style and colors. Per the School Board:


Students are to…


Backpacks
• Use backpacks clean of graffiti. Only the student's name is permitted on backpacks.
Bottoms: Pants and Skirts
• Wear Khaki/jean pants, slacks, shorts, skirts, and jumpers solid in color.
• Wear jeans or jean shorts with regular straight legs and with regular jean pockets.
• Wear pants, slacks, shorts, etc. made of cotton or cotton blends.
• Not wear painter or cargo pants with side, or large pockets.
• Not wear bell bottoms wider than his/her shoe size.
• Wear skirts, shorts, or jumpers that are pleated or non-pleated.
• Not wear skirts or shorts above the middle finger when arms hang by their side.
• Not wear basketball shorts or trousers except during athletic activities and applicable school events.
• Not wear excessively baggy pants. Clothes should be the proper size of the child.


Hats and Caps
• Not wear hats and caps except when they relate to a specific instructional, safety, religious, or medical reason.
• May use head coverings during bad weather days (snow, rain, cold winds, etc.)
 

Insignias
• Shirt or jacket insignia is optional. If parent decides to add it, it needs to read:
Arroyos del Norte Elementary
• Wear garments free of logos other than school logos.
 

Jackets and Coats
• Wear jackets/coats which fit properly.
• Not wear clothing with sports logos, lettering, designs, or pictures depicting a professional athletic team.
• Not wear clothing with gang affiliations, drugs, alcohol, or obscenities.

Make Up
• Not apply or bring any make up to or at school during instructional time unless it is connected to a school performance
• Not apply any lipstick, lip gloss that requires a mirror or is applied during instructional time
Organizations
• Wear organization's uniform on days when the organization has an event.
Shoes
• Wear shoes with closed toes. Sandals straps are acceptable during warm weather
• Not wear shoes with heels or platforms or flip flops.
Tops
• Wear short or long sleeve, collared, 3-button, solid-colored polo shirt.
• Wear polo shirts to school every school day and on ALL school field trips and school activities.
• Tuck shirts inside their pants and skirts.
 

Parents and Students are to…
• Write student's name on all outer wear.
• Have child choose clothing appropriate for outside play.
Students are to dress in a way that shows respect for and honor to themselves, their parents, and school.
 

UNACCEPTABLE DRESS
Student's dress may not present a health or safety hazard, violate municipal or state law, or present potential disruption to the instructional program.
School Board Policy does not allow…


• Attire and accessories, which advertise, display, or promote any drug (alcohol, tobacco, or other)
• Attire which promotes sexual activity, violence, disrespect, and/or bigotry toward any group
• Gang-related attire
• Excessively tight or revealing clothes
• Bare midriff
• Low cut and/or off-the-shoulder blouses
• Spiked jewelry
• Chains
• Belts with more than 2 inches excess after it's belted
• “Sagging" or the wearing of pants below the waist and/or in a manner that allows underwear or bare skin to show
• Any other restrictions as designated by the Principal.
 

General Guidelines
1. Pants must fit at waist and not be more than one size too large or too small.
2. Shorts, skirts, and jumpers will not be allowed if more than 3 inches above knee.
3. Bottoms will be made of cotton, cotton blend, jean, or khaki.
4. Clothing and outerwear must be free of logos with the exception school (RES) logo. Students may not wear any apparel that contains profanity, obscenities, and advertisements for alcohol, tobacco, drugs, sports athletic teams, or musical affiliation.
5. Students may not wear basketball shorts or similar trousers except during game/tournament days.
6. Backpacks must be free of graffiti. Only the student’s name and company name will be permitted on backpacks.
7. Students who participate in a nationally recognized youth organization shall be allowed to wear organization uniforms on days when the organization has a scheduled meeting.
8. Boys and girls must always tuck their shirts in.
9. There will be designated “free days” during the year.
