Suggested Procedures These are not steps to be followed in order. This is a general list of procedures to follow to keep your computer running well. Do not let students on your machine while you are logged in. Do not install screensavers, desktop animals, slide shows, etc... from the Internet If you have installed items on your computer, remove them by going to the Add / Remove programs in the Control Panel. Remove only those items you know you installed. If you see many many items that do not look like they should be there, please send a list to one of the IT team in GroupWise and we will let you know which to remove. Open My Computer, and right click on the C drive and bring up Properties. Click the button Disk Cleanup. After a progress bar finishes, click on the items that you want to clean. Do not check Compress files. All others could be checked but mainly the Temporary files and Internet files. Click OK. You should do this before you Defragment. There is a utility called Disk Defragmenter located in Accessories | System Tools. Bring this up and click on the C: drive and then click the Defragment button. This should be run once a month with heavy use of the computer. If you computer suddenly is not online, as in, one day you are on, the next your not and Windows says, "Cannot find tree or server," when you try to login, then check your network cables. Look on the back of the computer where the cable plugs in, there should be a green or orange light. If there is no light, make sure the cable is plugged all the way into the computer, it is the same as a phone jack only larger. If the light still does not go on, then check the other end of the cable. It should be plugged fully into the wall jack. If you have a small switch or hub in your room and there are no lights on it, then check the power to the switch. When you plug your computer's cable into a port, the light should some on. No lights, no network. |
