Instructions for Installing Printers
Networking Printer Install
Do not attempt to do this without getting an IP address from the IT Department.
For standard printer install please scroll to the bottom.
Any print server boxes that were installed previously have an IP address on them. To find out the address push the button on the back of the box and 2 pages will print. The second page has the IP address of that box. IP addresses for all print server boxes must be recorded at each school site. A copy of this list should be forwarded to the IT department.
Print servers IP addresses should begin with the number 15 except THS. Please contact one of the IT team to be assigned an IP address for a printer you wish to install. In most cases, one of us can come to do the initial install.
TMS numbers begin with 10.1.2.15 TES numbers begin with 10.4.1.15 EGS numbers begin with 10.4.1.15 RES numbers begin with 10.6.1.15 ANS numbers begin with 10.7.1.15 THS numbers begin with 10.2.2.50
To install an HP1200, begin by setting up the printer. Plug in the USB cable after removing the left side of the printer. Replace the door and plug the other end of the cable into the small JetDirect box. Plug in a network cable from the wall to the JetDirect box. Plug in power to the printer and then to the JetDirect box. Both lights on the box should flash and then stay solid. Put some paper in the tray of the printer. Press the small button on the back of the JetDirect box. This will print one page. Find the IP address of the box, top right. It will have a number that corresponds to your school such as 10.2.#.# for THS.
Keep the paper handy and put the printer’s CD in the CDROM drive. The HP printer install screen comes up.
Click Software Install Click Next Click Yes Check the circle next to “Connected to the Network” then click Next Check “No” for setting up on a Novell Server then click Next Check the circle next to “Basic….”, it is already checked, click Next Check the circle next to “Specify a printer by address” then click Next Check the circle next to “IP Address” and fill in the numbers from the paper and click Next For the FIRST install of a printer in a particular room, click on “Change Settings.” Enter the IP Address that is the next in line for the print servers at the school. See your building coordinator for a number. If you do not use the correct number, when power goes out, you will not be able to print when power is restored. Only the last number will have to be changed. At THS, the last two. This number goes for all Computers in the room that will use this printer. The “Change Settings” step will Not be followed on any other installations in the room. ONLY on the FIRST install of The JetDirect box is the “Change Settings” step used. On the succeeding installs, just use the IP address you typed in after clicking on “Change Settings.”
Leave the top field as “Windows TCP/IP,” this is the only choice anyway. Check the NO circle for MS-DOS printing (this only comes up on a Win98 machine), then click Next Select the model of printer, HP1200 and click Next, if you are installing the scanner then model 1220. Leave the circle on “Typical” and click Next Give the printer a name, just keep the “HP 1200 Laserjet,” delete the rest Check the circle for “Yes” to default printer and click Next Leave the circle for “Print test page” checked, uncheck the others Click on Finish, then Exit, and Exit again. DONE. A page should come from the printer. You may have to reboot.
Direct computer connection printing
To install an HP1200, begin by setting up the printer. Plug in the printer cable after removing the left side of the printer. Replace the door and plug the other end of the cable into into the connection on the back of your computer. There is only one plug that it can fit into. Plug in power to the printer.
Put the printer’s CD in the CDROM drive. The HP printer install screen comes up.
Click Software Install Click Next Click Yes Check the circle next to “Connected to this Computer” then click Next Check the port LPT1: and click Next. Click on the circle next to "Do not share this printer" Select the model of printer, HP1200 and click Next, if you are installing the scanner then model 1220. Leave the circle on “Typical” and click Next Give the printer a name, just keep the “HP 1200 Laserjet,” delete the rest Check the circle for “Yes” to default printer and click Next Leave the circle for “Print test page” checked, uncheck the others Click on Finish, then Exit, and Exit again. DONE. A page should come from the printer. You may have to reboot.
